Yes. With a smart meter you can switch to any supplier.
Please note, early versions of smart meters, called SMETS1 meters, sometimes lose their ability to communicate automatic readings when switched to a new supplier. This is an industry-wide problem which everyone is working hard to resolve.
The Smart Data Communications Company (DCC) act as the central body responsible for handling all communications, to and from a smart meter. Igloo, along with other energy suppliers, are working together with the DCC to improve the experience for all customers with a SMETS1 meter. This will make it possible for any supplier to access a meter reading if they are supplying the energy to the meter, even if they did not install the meter.
As you can imagine, there are lots of different meter set ups. We want to be completely transparent with our customers that the process across the industry to connect to these smart meters is taking longer than we expected. This makes it difficult for us provide a definitive timeline for when we can connect to your meter.
If you have a SMETS1 smart meter you can still switch to us, but you may need to provide manual meter readings until we can upgrade your smart meter. This update will take place remotely and will not require any engineering work. As a result, there is no need to replace your existing smart meter.
Second generation smart meters
If you have a second generation smart meter (SMETS2) then you will be able to switch to us without and loss of smart functionality. Just so you know, we only install the newest smart meters (SMETS2).
